One door for every use: Garage door trends and Normstahl best-sellers
Whether leggings, lava lamps or rustic country house kitchens – trends come and go. And some styles thought to be quite passé suddenly have come back into our lives years later. One recent example was the comeback of flared trousers popular in the hippy era. Garage doors, too, long since ceased to be merely utilitarian objects, are subject to changing trends. We reveal the latest garage door trends Normstahl has identified, and tell you which of our doors have become real best-sellers.
The garage as an important part of the house
Whereas a garage was long regarded solely as a functional space in which to keep a car, it has now become much more: Some people set up a workshop in it, or use it as a pantry or store room – complete with its own sophisticated organisational system. Whatever it is, individuality is key. And that is reflected not only in the size of the garage, but also in its design. The garage door plays a key role, as it’s usually the first feature to catch the observer’s eye. Modern-day garage doors therefore don't just have to be functional, they also have to fit in perfectly with the rest of the home. In terms of size, most garage doors today are between 2000 and 2490 cm high and between 2375 and 5000 cm wide. Custom-made doors have become more widespread recently, too, however. The door should, after all, fit seamlessly with the rest of the home's design.
Smooth surfaces and dark colours
Many people opt for garage door colours that visually blend in with the house’s entrance door, window frames or fencing, and still look contemporary years later. Grey aluminium and various shades of white are particularly trendy colours as timeless classics. Some go a step further and choose a garage door that reflects their character, in the same way as their front door. From rustic and natural, to elegant and classic – everything is possible nowadays. Anthracite grey, for example, has established itself as a popular favourite for garage doors, just as it has for kitchens, living room furnishings and cars. It provides a dark, sophisticated alternative to lighter shades, and can be combined with many other colours. The trend towards smooth modern surfaces fits perfectly with this. As does the return to naturalness being seen in many areas of life – including in the design of garage doors. So if you prefer a more natural look, opt for a trendy wood-effect garage door. Decorative light oak is the undisputed number one in the field.
Smart tools for more convenience
As trends advance, garage doors are also becoming more and more innovative. This means: The classic one-piece door originating from the 1970s is threatened with extinction. Instead, garage doors are increasingly being replaced by overhead and side sectional doors on Normstahl’s best-seller list. Most now come with an electric operator system for easy opening and closing. In other words: It’s all about ‘smart’ technology. More and more people are opting for smart garage door operator systems that use WLAN and can be optimally connected to a Smart Home network. Using an app, a smartphone can be turned into a remote control unit or key function.
