Garage door colours
Restrained, bold or out-of-the-ordinary? Garage doors and their colours
There are many ways to enhance the visual appeal of your home: an eye-catching façade, unusual lighting, sloping walls, a retaining wall made of natural stone, a fountain in the front garden, and much more – the possibilities are truly endless. But you can also do it more simply, and above all more cost-effectively: with a Normstahl garage door. Although our doors are more commonly encountered in standard RAL colours, we can take a more daring approach if you wish.
Normstahl standard colours
The garage door colours most frequently chosen by our customers are offered as standard. Those are mostly restrained colours, such as the range for sectional doors, starting with white and various shades of grey, through to a wood look finish:
Traffic white (similar to RAL 9016)
White aluminium (similar to RAL 9006)
Grey aluminium (similar to RAL 9007)
Anthracite (similar to RAL 7016)
Decorative grey metallic (similar to DB 703)
Decorative light oak 060
Decorative dark oak 070
For our one-piece doors, the mix of white, brown and grey shades is freshened up with a subtle moss green. For roller doors, an unobtrusive beige tone is one of the most popular colours. You can easily see which colours are offered as standard for which doors on the relevant product pages on our website. Or feel free to consult your local Normstahl dealer for advice on your new garage door colour.
Choosing a garage door colour
House builders are confronted with countless questions and decisions from the start of the planning process through to completion of the build. One decision is the design of the garage door. Because there are lots of options: models, surface finishes, design features – and colours too. Here are a few tips to (perhaps) make your decision a little easier:
What style is your house? Have you opted for a rustic or modern house design? Garage doors in a wood look are ideal for rustic-design houses; for modern designs, white or grey shades are best.
What is the house’s façade going to look like? The colour of the garage door needs to match the house.
What colour are the window frames and the roof? Many house builders match the garage door to their colouring to create a uniform look.
Is there going to be a front (or side) door to the house near the garage door? It, too, should match the garage door’s colour.
Take a look around your neighbourhood: Does it have a unified style that you’d like to keep to?
Are you planning to add an eye-catching design feature to embellish your home (such as its front door or façade, or perhaps a garden feature) – or do you prefer keeping it clean?
Is the impact of colour important to you? Then explore colour theory, and find out which colour suits you best. For example, green has a calming and harmonious effect, while yellow is optimistic and anxiety-relieving. Orange signifies joie de vivre; white innocence and purity; and brown security.
Browse through reference projects and impressions. Get inspired on Pinterest, drive around nearby towns, take extended walks around your local neighbourhoods, and talk to friends and acquaintances. Based on our experience, anthracite has been the most popular colour of Normstahl door for some years, though lighter shades of grey are gaining ground as well.
Garage doors beyond standard colours
In addition, Normstahl garage doors are available in any RAL colour for a small additional charge. You’ll also find a large selection of popular colours on our website in the relevant product categories. And if you like it a tad more colourful, you’re sure to find something you like there too. Along with restrained shades of grey and brown, the colour palette ranges from bright red to dark green.
How are the doors coloured?
There are three different treatment methods:
Foil-covered: The entire surface of the garage door is covered with a foil film in the desired colour. It is important that a high-quality foil is used, among other reasons to protect the door surface from UV radiation.
Finish coated/treated: By this method, the sheet metal panel is powder-coated at the production stage, rendering it highly durable. Our garage doors in standard colours are mostly produced with a finish coating.
Painted: The white panels are painted in the desired colour during production. This coating method is mostly used for special colours. To guarantee longer life, the surface is additionally coated with a clear lacquer.
